It is my great privilege to welcome all of you to Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, for the First International Conference on Management Science and Engineering Management (ICMSEM 2007). As this is the inaugural event of what we hope will become a long-standing academic tradition, your presence here is both deeply appreciated and truly meaningful.

This conference marks the beginning of a shared journey—one where researchers from diverse nations and disciplines gather to explore, debate, and advance the frontiers of Management Science and Engineering Management (MSEM). We are pleased to have received 428 submissions from 34 countries, reflecting the global interest in this emerging field. After a thorough review process, 61 outstanding papers were selected for presentation or poster display, covering an impressive range of topics—from decision support systems, scheduling and control, to service operations, customer relationship management, and uncertainty decision-making. These contributions not only showcase academic excellence but also address the practical demands of a rapidly changing world.

But what makes this conference truly special is not only the content of our sessions, but also the spirit of openness and exchange that animates our gathering. During these few days, we will engage in technical presentations, participate in round table discussions, and perhaps most importantly, build relationships that extend beyond disciplines and borders.

We are also proud to provide a cultural and scenic setting that reflects the richness of our academic environment. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is not only one of China’s historic cultural centers, but also a vibrant modern city known for its culinary heritage, relaxed lifestyle, and deep intellectual tradition. Following the conference, our post-event tours offer a glimpse of this region’s natural and cultural treasures. In this relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere—whether admiring the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system, strolling through the old streets of Jinli, or savoring a bowl of Sichuan hotpot—we hope that fruitful conversations will continue and new collaborations will blossom.

As the first chapter of ICMSEM begins here at Sichuan University, we look forward to shaping this platform into a global forum for research, dialogue, and innovation in management and engineering. Let us take this opportunity not only to share knowledge, but to listen, connect, and envision the future together.
